London, England — The Australian women’s national wheelchair basketball team, the Gliders, defeated the USA Thursday in a 40–39 thriller at the North Greenwich Arena.

This semifinal victory advances the Gliders into the final, where they are to meet the winner of the day’s match between the Netherlands and Germany. They are guaranteed at least silver. The Gliders won silver in Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004 and bronze in Beijing in 2008, but have never won the gold. The USA team is to meet the loser of that match to contest the bronze.

The Gliders’ quest for Paralympic gold medals began last week with a narrow 52–50 defeat of Brazil. The Aussies then crushed Great Britain 51–24. Australia had a loss to Canada 50–57, but bounced back to win against the Netherlands, 58–49. This advanced Australia to the quarter final, where the Gliders met and defeated Mexico 62–37.

Team USA started by defeating France 63–24 in its first game. It then lost to Germany, 54–48. It came back and defeated Mexico 67–33. Team USA came from 21 behind to defeat China in extra time, and played Canada and won in the quarter final 67–55.

The first quarter got off to an exciting start. USA had first possession and chalked up the first score. Kylie Gauchi responded quickly with a good shot, leveling the score. Then followed an exciting passage of play in which USA turned the ball over, but Clare Nott lost it on a bad pass. Shelly Chaplin then stole it back but Kylie Gauchi put it out of bounds. Clare Nott stole it back again, only to have Gauichi turn it over again. The USA took a shot at the basket from inside the paint, but missed. They then took a rebound and finally scored. A USA free throw extended their lead to 2–6. Thereafter both teams’ shooting was poor, and the score was only 10–12 at quarter time.

The second quarter started with Merritt scoring twice to give Australia the lead 14–12. A ferocious Australian defence saw USA’s style severely cramped, and they turned the ball over a number of times. They also took too long to move the ball forward. The crowd included the familiar block of Gliders fans in yellow T-shirts. They made their presence felt, chanting “Defence, Gliders, Defence!” whenever USA had the ball. Unfortunately, the Gliders’ poor shooting prevented them from fully capitalising on their superb defence, leaving the score tied at 26–26 at half time.

In the third quarter, an early goal by Kylie Gauchi from outside the paint gave the Gliders the lead. A series of steals gave the Gliders additional shots at goal, most of which missed, but USA had no answer to the Australian defence, with a series of timeouts and turnovers, and their shooting was even poorer. While the Australians relentlessly racked up point after point, taking a 32–26 lead, USA were unable to score at all until the last minute of the quarter. A hurried goal with seconds to go by Katie Hill saw the Gliders leading 38–28 at the last change.

In the fourth quarter, the Australian defence remained taut, but the shooting remained terrible. In the final accounting, Cobi Crispin only made 3 out of 10 shots, and Amber Merritt only 4 out of 16. The Glider’s most accurate shot turned out to be Clare Nott, who made four out of five attempts. Meanwhile, an increasingly desperate USA team pegged the Australians back to 40–39. Three timeouts were taken in the last minute. Fouls saw Merritt sent to the free throw line, but she missed both shots. The game went down to the last second, with USA missing a shot from inside the paint, before the shot clock ran out.

Sydney Opera House ‘No War’ activists face court for paint cans

By | March 11, 2017

Tuesday, January 3, 2006

Two activists convicted for painting the words “NO WAR” in five-metre-high red letters on the highest sail of Sydney Opera House in March 2003, are facing court action again to prevent them from auctioning the equipment used to paint the controversial sign.

Dr Will Saunders and David Burgess were sentenced to nine months periodic detention and ordered to pay the Opera House Trust $151,000 for malicious damage to the building on March 18, 2003.

The pair spent six months in jail for painting the slogan on one of the sails of the Opera House on the eve of the invasion of Iraq. The protesters say they wish to auction the equipment for humanitarian causes in Iraq.

Police confiscated the paint can and two brushes used in the incident and have now applied for a court order to have the can and brushes destroyed. They are saying such an auction would contravene proceeds of crime laws.

Saunders said they wanted to auction the can and send the proceeds to humanitarian causes in Iraq. According to The Australian newspaper, Mr Saunders said the auction could be conducted by a registered charity to raise money for the Mother and Child Hospital in Basra.

He said the can should also be preserved as an important piece of Sydney history.

“We want to give the surplus money that we’ve raised, and anything extra we can make from an auction – not only the paint pot … I think we can raise many many thousands of dollars,” he said. “We’d be happy to come to any reasonable arrangement with the police about how this auction takes place … it’s just mean beyond belief, petty-minded just to destroy it.”

The matter will go before a Sydney court on January 16.

Meanwhile, the world-famous Sydney Opera House is one of 21 international landmarks short-listed to become the new Seven Wonders of the World. The list includes modern landmarks such as Paris’ Eiffel Tower and older candidates like the Colosseum in Rome and China’s Great Wall.

$106 billion war bill backed by U.S. House of Representatives

$106 billion war bill backed by U.S. House of Representatives

Thursday, June 18, 2009

The United States’ House of Representatives backed a US$106 billion dollar (€75 billion) war bill today. The Senate will take a look at the bill next. The bill would fund the war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The final vote was 226-202 in favor of the bill. The bill will also give authorization for $108 billion for credit lines for the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The bill will help to move President Barack Obama’s plans to the next stage — namely reducing operations in Iraq and expanding in Afghanistan

The bill was tough to pass, with only five Republicans supporting it and thirty-two Democrats voting against. The lack of Republican support was due to the introduction of measures to provide $108 billion of new credit lines to the IMF, which they argue should have been part of a separate bill.

The bill also included compromises with regards to Guantanamo Bay, allowing suspects to be taken to the United States for questioning but not for permanent detention.

How To Hire Local Concrete Cutting Company}

By | March 10, 2017

Submitted by: Maria A Williams

Concrete surfaces and structures don`t last forever, so if you require a concrete cutter in Sydney we may think it is best to hire skilled and properly qualified operator to create cracks and to facilitate the demolition. Drilling down and cutting down are always followed with a huge mess and dust so it is always better to find local, professional concrete cutting contractor. They can do a much cleaner and more efficient job. On the face of it, you need to visualise someone with proper equipment and skills together with maximum resources. Hiring Sydney based concrete cutters with a proven track record and plenty of experience is the first criteria when making such a huge decision.

1. You need someone with Good Reputation

The cutting service provider must be capable to build a positive reputation. They must possess knowledge and experience, so you can have confidence even for the most difficult and delicate projects. There are always plenty of contractors to choosing from, but their reputation is the main consideration you need to go for. Furthermore the final price, arranged deadlines and personal skills, can be the deciding factors after the professional competence. Inspecting out the reputation of a local Sydney concrete cutter is quite easy, with a few different avenues to take.

Visit their website – Choose a cutter who owns a quality website. From the website you can see how concrete cutting Sydney is a part of Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association of Australia (CSDAA). There are many ways you can check the competence of the contractor – you can seek for recommendations. The provider you choose can give you documentation and recommendations from previous projects and the work they have done to someone else.

2. You need a provider who is Affordable

There is a tendency to expect from local specialists – whether they are concrete cutters or other tradesperson – because of the local market conditions you can ask for a lower quote. However, local companies can give you a more rational quote than international or regional companies with bigger projects, which means they will ask for more resources for the same project. This doesn`t mean that local operators don`t have competence, skills or equipment; they are just more affordable to work with. They have to be highly efficient too, but because there is always more than one competitor in Sydney, the rates have to be more affordable and flexible and while the value for money has to be extremely high.

3. Equipment and Technology

By definition, the local concrete provider you will choose must have the complete facilities to maintain every single project successfully. Of course, if the provided equipment is good enough, it can repair the damage effortlessly and the demand of labour is eased considerably.

4. Accredited by Progressive Association

Choose a local concrete company that is accredited as a member by a national or international association or federation. Somehow, you will have a further guarantee that the contractor adheres to the working standards, respecting all safety regulations during the cutting process.

300 protesters greet Farage’s return to Edinburgh

300 protesters greet Farage’s return to Edinburgh

By |

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Roughly 300 protesters turned up yesterday for the return of Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, to Edinburgh after last year’s disastrous attempt at a press conference in a pub at the foot of The Canongate. Unseen by protesters or public, Farage is believed to have left the venue around 7:30pm.

Farage’s last visit saw protesters leaving him barracked in the bar by police, with several taxis refusing to take the party leader and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for South East England to the airport.

Given the hostile reception on his last visit, far-right group Britain First garnered publicity earlier in the week with an apparent offer of “armoured vehicles” for Farage’s visit. However, no support from ex-BNP councillor Paul Golding’s political party, or the offered armoured vehicles, were in-evidence.

Despite attempts to keep the location secret, the Radical Independence Campaign began calling for protesters to turn up on Friday, at the city’s Corn Exchange, nearly a week before the event. Farage was already believed to be inside the building when Wikinews arrived shortly after 4:30pm. At that time, five satellite trucks were present and New Market Road, running past the venue, was still open to traffic.

Protesters began arriving en-masse closer to 5:30pm, with numbers peaking around an hour later. Police vans were moved to block the road; although, traffic to the venue was still being permitted for a wedding party with the misfortune to pick the same date as Farage’s only visit to Scotland during the current European Parliament election campaign.

Several speakers addressed the crowd protesting against UKIP being in Scotland, with the actual number of UKIP attendees inside, to hear Farage speak, estimated at around 50. One speaker, a schoolteacher, challenged the mainstream media’s acceptance of UKIP’s assertion the party is not racist, stating her primary school pupils were more-capable of identifying racism and would be pointing its presence out within UKIP were they present.

Although loud, the protest passed peacefully. Chants directed at UKIP included “Whose streets? Our streets! Whose city? Our city!”, “Say it loud, say it clear: Refugees are welcome here!” Other taunts called UKIP “scum”, urged people to “smash the SDL” (Scottish Defence League), and clearly labelled UKIP and its supporters as racist.

US White House correspondent Helen Thomas retires

US White House correspondent Helen Thomas retires

By |

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Veteran White House journalist Helen Thomas, 89, announced her retirement yesterday with immediate effect, ending her fifty-seven year career, amid criticism over controversial remarks.

Thomas has been a correspondent for over fifty years and has covered every president from John F. Kennedy to Obama. Thomas, the daughter of Lebanese immigrants, who blazed a trail for female reporters in politics in the United States, has ended her career after apologizing for saying that Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine.”

In retiring, Thomas stated: “I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”

Her departure as Hearst Newspaper columnist was announced after she was captured on video saying: “Remember, these people are occupied and it’s their land. It’s not Germany, it’s not Poland,” and that Israelis should “get the hell out of Palestine” and “they should go home” to Poland, Germany, the US and “everywhere else.”

Rabbi David Nesenoff, an independent filmmaker, said he spoke to Thomas outside the White House on Jewish Heritage Day on May 27. Video of her controversial comments were widely disseminated on the Internet by his website,, that relaunched last week.

Thomas was absent from Monday’s White House briefing. She was dropped by her public speaking agency and a high school commencement address was canceled. The White House Correspondents Association called her remarks “indefensible”. The Hearst statement came shortly after White House press secretary Robert Gibbs called her remarks “offensive and reprehensible.”

Thomas has been a correspondent for fifty-seven years, she had worked for decades as a White House correspondent for United Press International and became a columnist for the Hearst newspaper chain in recent years. She was the first female officer of the National Press Club, the first female member and president of the White House Correspondents Association, and, in 1975, the first female member of the Gridiron Club.

Thomas did little to hide her views, with her questions to Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and their press secretaries often about the wars in the Middle East. Two weeks ago, she asked Obama, “Mr. President, when are you going to get out of Afghanistan? Why are you continuing to kill and die there? What is the real excuse? And don’t give us this Bushism, ‘If we don’t go there, they’ll all come here.'”

Helen Thomas has written five books. During Kennedy’s administration, Helen ended all presidential press conferences with a signature “Thank you, Mr. President” and always issued a caveat about her work: “In my career you’re only as good as your last story.”

Popular soap opera ‘The Young and the Restless’ celebrates 35 years on the air

Popular soap opera ‘The Young and the Restless’ celebrates 35 years on the air

By |

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

The popular American soap opera The Young and the Restless, currently the reigning Emmy Award-winner for best daytime drama, celebrated 35 years on the air Wednesday.

The 35th anniversary also comes after the series, known colloquially as Y&R, marked its 1,000th straight week as the highest-rated soap opera in a daytime slot. In addition to keeping the #1 spot every week since December 1988, Y&R has also been the top-rated soap in the African-American demographic since 1991.

A trend-setter since the beginning, Y&R relied on character-driven storytelling, accentuated with understated sexuality from its cast, which at that time was mostly young, in order to bring in teenage and twentysomething viewers who were ignored by soap producers and networks up to that time. These traits immediately set Y&R apart from other soap operas, and other soaps have since mimicked Y&R’s formulaic approach to offering something for everyone, especially younger viewers.

Since premiering on March 26, 1973, Y&R has become a worldwide cultural institution in its own right, racking up an impressive 100 Emmy Awards between the writers, producers, cast and crew since 1974. The show has aired in over 100 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Italy, and Turkey, and reaches a worldwide audience of ten million daily. So far-reaching was Y&R’s appeal that Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci chose the serial’s theme song as accompanying music to her floor exercises at the 1976 Summer Olympics. In Australia, where Y&R has aired since 1974, the show was canceled by the original network that aired it in 2007, prompting a widespread fan backlash in that country. It was quickly moved to a pay channel.

Over the past 35 years, countless characters, marriages, divorces, births, deaths, and every joy and trauma in between have visited the residents of Genoa City, where Y&R is set. To commemorate the milestone, Mike Halterman from Wikinews interviewed three actresses who have played long-running characters on Y&R, and asked them to share their memories. All three responded to questions about what being on Y&R means to them, what their favorite storylines were, what they perhaps would have wanted to do all over again, and what they’d love to tell their fans directly.

Below are portions of all three interviews.

Dog Care Tips For Dog Health}

By |

More Detail Here:

Submitted by: Dr.Mike Boucher

Keep your dog safe in your backyard. All dogs suffer when it is too hot. Some are particularly vulnerable to heatstroke. If you are in a hot climate, make sure you have a shaded area or a porch where the dog can get out of the sun. It is vital they have a secure source of fresh water; by secure we mean he can’t easily tip it over. Common sense is important when deciding whether it is safe to leave your dog outside: a short coated dog or a companion dog that is bred to spend his life indoors will not be able to tolerate being left outside in a cold climate. Your dog care tips include:

Avoid Dog Poisoning

Antifreeze kills dogs. It is reported that antifreeze has a taste that dogs like so they are naturally attracted to it. As a responsible dog owner, this dog care tips is one of the most important dog health care tips that I can give you. Make sure that antifreeze is stored in a sealed container and when flushing your radiator that you are quick to thoroughly wash away any spills that may occur.

Protect Your Dogs Paws

Protect your dogs paws from harmful irritants such as salt when walking your dog in the winter. You should know that both ice and salt can be harmful to the pads on your dogs paws. Both can damage the skin leading to tears or possible infections on the pad of the paw. Also, most dogs will lick the salt off of their paws thus digesting the chemicals found in the road salt. Pet supply store. Your dog may resist wearing the booties at first but you should be persistent in order to protect their sensitive paw pads. Play it safe and train your dog to wear dog booties.

Safe confinement:

New dogs that are just starting to learn the basic of potty training should be put in a safe confinement. Safe confinement like crates or cages is recommended for this dog training. Crates or cages can give the dogs the right idea about potty discipline. The size of the crate or cages should not be large, because large sizes will encourage the dog to eliminate on any part of the crates or cage. To be more effective, don’t put any newspaper, box or blankets inside the crates or cage to avoid your dog from chewing it

Proper Training:

One effective way to train them is by using a leash. Since they are coming from crates or cage, they will be playful and distracted when you let them out so it is recommended that you use a leash.

Leash is an effective tool to get back their attention to their potty training. You can use the leash to also make directions where your dogs will eliminate. But remember that you should always supervise your dog when on a leash. Using a leash will be more effective with proper use of words in dog potty training. Words like “outside” or “let’s go pee” will show your dogs that the right place to eliminate is outside the house and not inside the cage or the house. Aside from the word outside or let’s go pee, you can create your own “command name” that will signal to your dog that it is time for eliminating or urinating outside. Whatever the “command name” that you will use, you have to be consistent in using it in training your dog to let your dog get used to it.
