Fear and loathing on the campaign trail, July 2008

By | January 27, 2017

Saturday, August 9, 2008

July 2008 on the campaign trail will be remembered prominently for what people close to the campaign opined about the election. On both sides of the aisle a former presidential candidate made a statement demonized by the media. The media’s coverage of the election was scrutinized by the media itself and became an issue that even the candidates discussed on the trail. The trends of the previous months were continued as another third party candidate rose and another influential election journalist (Tony Snow) died.

  • Barack Obama’s shift to the political center in light of his liberal backing was documented by the media. It was noted that Obama had stated that he agreed with Republicans in backing a bill granting immunity to telecommunication businesses that participated in surveillance of terrorists and recognized that he agreed with the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision split upon ideological lines to lift the hand gun ban in Washington D.C. The move was also supported by Obama’s remarks that he would “refine” his positions on the war in Iraq.
  • Former Democratic presidential candidate Jesse Jackson stated in an interview during a commercial break that he believed Barack Obama was “talking down to black people” and that he would like to “cut his nuts out.” The comments were in response to Barack Obama’s comments that “Any fool can have a child. That doesn’t make you a father.” Jackson apologized to Obama and the campaign’s spokesman stated that Obama “of course accepts Reverend Jackson’s apology.”
  • New Yorker magazine set off a firestorm of controversy when it released its July 21 edition with a cover portraying Barack Obama and his wife Michelle as Islamic extremists. The publication claimed the cover was a satirical representation of rumors floating that Obama is secretly Muslim but both the Obama and McCain campaigns criticized the cover as “tasteless and offensive.”
  • Obama visited the Middle East and Europe later in the month on a Senatorial “fact finding” mission with fellow Senators Chuck Hagel and Jack Reed. Obama met with world leaders and discussed the American strategy in Iraq with General David Petraeus and drew large crowds including 200,000 at an event in Berlin. During the trip Obama articulated his support for an increase in the American forces in Afghanistan. The trip received an abundance of media coverage and was followed by anchors from America’s top news networks.
  • Virginia governor Tim Kaine emerged as the frontrunner for the Vice-presidential nomination for the Democratic Party according to sources within the Obama campaign. The source stated that Kaine “ranks very, very high on the shortlist” along with Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana, Senator Joe Biden of Delaware and Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.
Third Parties
  • Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney of Georgia won the nomination of the Green Party at the party’s convention in Chicago. After winning the nomination McKinney proclaimed that “A vote for the Green Party is a vote for the movement that will turn this country right-side-up again.” She is a vocal critic of the Bush administration suggesting that it covered up information regarding the 9/11 attacks. McKinney selected hip hop artist and Green activist Rosa Clemente as her running mate.
  • Libertarian Party nominee Bob Barr reached 10% in a Zogby poll conducted in New Hampshire in July although Barr had not yet reached the number of signatures required to be included on the ballot in the state. Barr emphasized the promising results while campaigning and stated that he will continue his fight to be included on the ballot in all 50 states.
  • Comments made by Bob Barr that the government “has to do something” to help Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae in light of the 2008 GSE support plan were instantly criticized by presidential candidate Charles Jay of the little known Boston Tea Party. Jay gained some media attention by claiming that Barr was wrong describing him as a “dixiecrat” and stating that the government should “let free markets flow.” Jay’s comments are representative of some Libertarian dissatisfaction with Barr, which fractured the Convention in May.
  • Similar to the previous summer, John McCain reshuffled his campaign staff: the biggest move being his replacement of campaign manager Rick Davis with Karl Rove’s associate Steve Schmidt as the controller of campaign operations. The moves gave indications of a possible upheaval in the campaign but these charges were denied by advisor Carly Fiorina who stated that McCain was simply “ramping up” his campaign. It was also revealed that McCain planned to release a series of advertisements aimed at voters in the midwest.
  • Economic advisor for John McCain, former Senator Phil Gramm stated that America was a nation of “whiners” who are in a state of “mental recession.” McCain countered that he “strongly disagree[d]” with the statements and that “Phil Gramm does not speak for me. I speak for me.” After months of being touted as a possible Treasury Secretary in a McCain administration, when asked what role Gramm might play in light of his recent comments McCain remarked that he “would be in serious consideration for ambassador to Belarus, although I’m not sure the citizens of Minsk would welcome that.”
  • John McCain criticized Barack Obama for his position on Iraq as the Democratic candidate visited the nation. He stated that Obama was wrong for formulating a plan for the future of the nation before assessing the conditions on the ground. In an interview with Katie Couric, McCain stated that he “would much rather lose a campaign than lose a war. Senator Obama has indicated that by his failure to acknowledge the success of the surge [in Iraq], that he would rather lose a war than lose a campaign.”
  • Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal announced on Fox News that he’s “got the job [he] want[s]” and that he’s “not going to be the vice presidential nominee” although insiders stated that Jindal would take the job if asked. This came as McCain praised Jindal and Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty as “the future of the Republican Party.” The two along with Florida governor Charlie Crist and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney are said to be the top prospects to be McCain’s running mate.
  • McCain released an ad late in July that gave his campaign more media exposure. The ad described Obama as “the biggest celebrity in the world” and compared the Senator to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. It was later reported that at the end of the month McCain was a “significant or dominant factor” in 74% of campaign coverage compared to 81% for Obama, perhaps as a result of the new ad.

7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes off Haitian coast

7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes off Haitian coast

By |

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Haiti earlier today at 21:53 UTC, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, no tsunami warning was issued, contradicting some media reports that said there was one in place. The quake’s magnitude was revised down from an initial report of 7.3 on the Richter scale.

“A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data,” the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. “However, there is the possibility of a local tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a 100 km [60 miles] from the earthquake epicentre.”

The USGS reports that the epicentre was fifteen kilometres (ten miles) southwest of Port-au-Prince and 1,140 kilometers (708 miles) southeast of Miami, Florida, at a depth of ten kilometres.

According to USGS analyst Dale Grant, this tremor was “the largest quake recorded in this area”; the last strong quake was in 1984, and had a magnitude of 6.7, he noted.

Are you in the area? Did you feel the earthquake?

“Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken. The sky is just gray with dust,” said Henry Bahn, an official with the US Department of Agriculture who was visiting in Haiti and a witness to the incident. “I just held on and bounced across the wall. I just hear a tremendous amount of noise and shouting and screaming in the distance,” he commented, as quoted by the Associated Press.

According to data from the USGS, there were thirteen aftershocks after the initial tremors, the strongest of which was 5.9 on the Richter scale; seven others measured in at 5.0 or higher – all the aftershocks were 4.0 or greater.

No deaths have yet been reported, but a hospital in Port-au-Prince was damaged, and a US government official said several houses fell into a ravine. An analyst for USGS in Colorado commented that there could be many deaths from an earthquake of this strength. “I think we are going to see substantial damage and casualties,” he said.

The USGS’s Mike Blanpied remarked that about three million people were impacted by the earthquake, given its location. “This quake occurred under land as opposed to off-shore, so a lot of people were directly exposed to the shaking coming off that earthquake fault, which was quite shallow,” he said.

A lack of communications makes it difficult to ascertain what damage was done. US embassy personnel were “literally in the dark” due to power failures, said State Department spokesman P. J. Crowley. “They reported structures down. They reported a lot of walls down. They did see a number of bodies in the street and on the sidewalk that had been hit by debris. So clearly, there’s going to be serious loss of life in this,” he said, as quoted by AP. A reporter for Reuters said he had seen “dozens of dead and injured people” amidst collapsed buildings.

“We are trying to get in touch with our people on the ground but we are experiencing communication problems, which is not unusual in a disaster such as this,” said United Nations spokeswoman Stephanie Bunker to Agence France-Presse.

So clearly, there’s going to be serious loss of life in this.

Appeals for aid flooded in following the disaster. In a phone call to CNN, the Haitian ambassador to the US, Raymond Joseph, said: “I’m calling on all friends of Haiti and people who are listening to me to please come to our aid. Today as Haiti is going through the worst day in its history I am calling for all others who got help from us in the beginning to help in support. The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best.”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised that her country would also provide assistance to Haitians. “The United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and to others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and our prayers are with the people who have suffered, their families and their loved ones.”

President Barack Obama also said that the country would be “ready to assist” Haiti.

From: Sue Gardner <edited> Date: Jan 5, 2008 4:15 AM Subject: Thanks re Wikipedia meeting, & next steps To: Jonathan Schwartz <edited>, Greg Papadopoulos <edited> Cc: Roger McNamee <edited>, Erik Möller <edited>

Hi Jonathan & Greg,

This is just a quick note to say thanks so much for meeting with Roger, Erik & me in December. We really appreciate it – hope you both had good holidays afterwards.

In the meeting, we talked about the possibility of Sun making a major contribution to Wikimedia’s hosting, so that you could reinforce your position as open source leaders by association with us in your marketing. We think this makes sense, and would love to make it work.

Next steps. Erik will pull together a wishlist, which we will send to you by the end of January – let’s say January 28. The list will likely come in two versions: one focusing on our immediate needs and our preferences in terms of hardware and software, and one laying out a “Wikimedia runs on Sun” scenario in which we fully switch over, with your help, to an integrated Sun environment. They will target different scales, let’s say about $1M in hardware vs. $5M in hardware/software/support.

Please let us know if any of this is contrary to what you remember, or if you want us to refine/revise anything. Otherwise, you’ll hear from us in about three weeks.

Thanks, Sue

Californian computer company lodges antitrust suit against Microsoft

Tuesday, February 21, 2006 Tangent Computer, a computer services and hardware company based in Burlingame, California has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft. The lawsuit filed on February 14, 2006 claims that Microsoft continues to breach federal antitrust laws.

Tangent alleges that Microsoft fosters tactics “to prevent and destroy competition” while raising prices of its software to “supra-competitive levels.” Tangent is arguing that the tactics are a violation of section 2 Sherman Antitrust Act, a federal law prohibiting unfair business practices and monopolies.

The lawsuit details legal issues which have faced Microsoft since the 1980s, and requests that an amount of monetary damages to be determined by a jury at a trial.

Tangent is an original equipment manufacturer who has purchased and installed Microsoft operating systems since 1995. In addition to their hardware business, they also provide Internet content monitoring, spam filtering, anti-spyware and adware solutions, network vulnerability assessments, active directory tools and migration services.

Essential Items You Should Bring Along During An Evacuation

Even without reading a survival guide, you might have been hearing a great deal about survival bags and bug out kits lately. The truth is, the more news of accidents and calamities happening all over the world, the more people are finding out about these survival bags. Emergency bags are meant for hectic situations, or in scenarios wherein there is no time to think and even less time to gather all the things you need to evacuate to a safer place. Some people like to keep these kits near the entrance or inside the vehicle so that they’re ready to evacuate at any time.

Tips for Making Your Survival Kit

1. Light and Heat Resources

You must always suppose that you will not have a constant supply of electricity if you move out of your home because of a natural calamity. With this in mind, you can come up with various plans to provide yourself with lighting and heating supplies. Get battery-operated lamps, water-resistant matches and flint. Keep the batteries and matches in waterproof plastic containers.

2. Ponchos, Jackets and a Change of Clothing

Garments that shelter you from the elements are great to pack in your survival kits. These pieces of clothing should have the capacity to protect you from the cold and from rain, and can double as pillows when the weather is warm. You must never forget to include a change of clothing, particularly socks and underwear. Wrap your clothing in rainproof plastic to keep them dry.

Wear neon colored clothing like those that bikers wear to be more detectable to motorists. If you’re evacuating on foot, these are important for your welfare.

3. Provisions and Water

It is suggested to include an unopened bottle of distilled water inside the kit for individual use. But if you’re fleeing from danger with your family, the one who can carry more should lug a gallon or two of distilled water for the whole family to drink. Power drinks are not recommended as they are diuretics.

Trail mix and power bars are excellent as emergency food. Anything that will keep well without refrigeration and small enough to fit inside the kit can be used.

4. Temporary shelter

Whether it’s a small umbrella or a tarp for two individuals, make sure you have something that will defend you from precipitation and cold just in case you need to sleep out in the open. Waterproof tents are recommended for this purpose. You can spray your tarpaulin with silicon to provide more lasting power and toughness. Small raincoats can be added into the bags meant for children, while bigger tarpaulins can be carried by teenagers.

5. Knife for Cutting

A jungle knife is required for cutting rope, opening canned food and for self-protection. It is also needed for making fire when you are utilizing flint instead of matches. Grown-ups should be the ones to carry knives in their bags.

6. First Aid Bag

The basic first aid kit includes remedies for severe headaches, tummy aches and for treating wounds. You should also stock up on bandages and cotton balls. Have a splint ready just in case a person slips and breaks a bone. Your first aid kit should also include anti-hypersensitivity pills if one person in your family is allergic to dust or other pollutants. Medicines for high blood pressure should be added into your first aid kit if a person is suffering from hypertension in your family. The same goes for other conditions that need maintenance tablets.

CN Health & Safety Plan planned to be cancelled

CN Health & Safety Plan planned to be cancelled

By |

Monday, August 29, 2005

On July 18, 2005 CN Rail notified the CAW that they intend to cancel the CN-CAW previously Negotiated Health & Safety Plan. The CAW will be going to arbitration this fall to address the issue. The CAW has asked that employees notify their Health and Safety Rep about any safety concerns at the work place.

One terminal has lost 5-6 full-time positions. CN Rail used to have part-time positions filled as well, but at this time there are no part-time employees to cover work if a full-time employee is absent. Overtime is necessary to keep the trains running on time. Intermodal traffic goes up, but staff goes down. CN Rail expects the trains to go out on time, and in a safe condition, but staff is overworked, because there are not enough of them. In fact, one worker noticed that most of the rail cars that contained 40 foot overseas containers did not have their loading guides in place. Trains are not allowed to go out without these guides placed into the cars (the guides stop the loads from swaying from side to side in the cars), important for safety with double stacked containers, but it seems that in this case the lack of employees forced the train to leave without them.

Some recent derailments have come to the attention of the media and politicians.

On August 3rd 2005 there was a derailment in Wabamun Lake Alberta that spilled toxins into the lake. 2 days later there was a derailment in Cheakamus River near Squamish BC. Both derailments spilled hazardous materials into the water. Many are saying that CN took too long to notify people of the toxic spills.

The Conductor on each train carries with him the shipping manifest with him and has access to that information at all times. Almost any CN terminal that has a clerk working at it with access to the CN Intranet can get this information within minutes.

CTV news has said that this is the 5th derailment for CN this month.
