Lights and Miniatures: The Awe Factor

If you have completed a kit, furnished it, and are looking for another adventure then try lighting. Adding Lights removes your miniature set from being just another toy to a display item that will sit no longer in the toy box, but on the living room mantel. Lighting your kit can be a fun yet challenging time. And why shouldn’t that challenge encourage us to try? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. In addition to that you are given instructions and help in setting it up. Sure you are going to make mistakes, but you will learn and it will get easier for you. We recommend getting a small electrical kit to start, they are simple to set up and get started with. Remember whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t you are right.

Adding a Mood

Designers might know about lighting, and colors, but only the great ones design for mood. A mood is the purpose of the room, the reason that it exists. One example of a mood is the dining room should be a place of meeting, where people can relax and talk to one another. Another example would be a bedroom, which is more personal, intimate, and is directly affected by the personality of the resident. Just as houses are dictated by mood, a great dollhouse should as well. To help you get in the mood setting, picture the room and the feelings that emanate from that room, then design colors, furniture, and styles to match that setting. The more you can portray the appropriate move, the more you will convince your friends and family your great skills as a miniaturist.

Making your Miniature House Better: Floor Trim

As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. This big discovery was floor trim. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. I painted them white, which went with all the walls in my dollhouse, and attached them to the floors throughout the house. I was most impressed to not see any more tiny cracks between the wall and the flooring due to the trim covering it up. Another great thing about the trim is that it covers the edges of the wallpaper and prevents fraying. It was a little addition that was fun to install and really added to the look of my dollhouse.

Creating Colors that Work in your Environment

Color will be the over ruling design medium for your dollhouse furniture and design choices. The desire to coordinate is known throughout any art or design school and is taught at a basic level using a color wheel. This wheel was designed to fit all colors into a solid circle to express similarities and differences. Opposing colors are the most different and offer attractiveness to the eye called contrast, colors touching each other are the most similar and can be accent colors that heighten, but dont distract from the feel. This by no means is a full explanation of the science of color, but a mere push to get you thinking in the right direction for your dollhouse coordination.
